The best way to get around the city is by subway especially for going uptown or downtown. (take a cab to go across town east/west)
Maps are posted in all the subway stations and in the subway cars or you can ask anyone in uniform for which line to take.
A few years back they tried to simplify the system by getting rid of the tokens. The token system has now been totally eliminated. Now we use 'Metro cards' which can be very confusing to use. The main thing to remember is that once your in the subway system ie you swiped your card and gone thru the turnstiles, you can ride the subway as far as you want for the one flat price of US$2.00 that was deducted from your metro card. You could literally ride around the city in circles for ever for just $2.00 as long as you don't exit the system. You can buy a one trip metro card (paper card) but be careful they 'expire' about 2 hours after you purchase them so don't buy any of these in advance...you wont get your money back. If you purchase a metro card you can get a discount for buying more trips at one time. The metro cards are 'Re-fillable' you just put them back into the machine and puts some money or credit card in and it will add trips to an existing card.
